Chattering Birds
“If it weren’t for the last minute, I wouldn’t get anything done.” ~ by Author Unknown
Every week, the third grade students at my son’s school receive a quote from their teacher. They are then given a week to think about it. And, with the help of their parents, they are then supposed to write a paragraph telling what they think that quote means. The latest quote we were given was due today. So last night after dinner, we sat down to go over the quote. But my son had other ideas. He got up and got something to drink, getting in the way of his sister trying to unload the dishwasher. He did a couple flips and turns in the living room as he tried to find the paper with the quote on it, eventually forgetting what he was even looking for in the first place. He noticed that the allowance due to him on the calendar was not updated, so he went to try and change it. But then he remembered that he hadn’t done any chores for a very long time. He ate a piece of fruit despite the fact that we had just finished dinner only moments before. He stared off in space….. It was like pulling teeth or herding cats, or like pulling teeth of herded cats, to get him to stay on task so that we could get this done. Finally I got him to locate the paper with the quote.
“What does it say?” I asked him.
“It says ‘A chattering bird builds no nest.’” And then he wanted to know what it meant.
Oh, the irony.
